Vegetable garden: growing sweet corn
Before sowing, the soil shall be prepared by adding some compost. Seedlings take place between May and June outdoors, in rows, in pockets of 3-4 seeds. Sowing can take place before, around March if done indoors. They are then transplanted outdoors in May. Harvesting takes place 3 to 4 months after planting.
As with many vegetables, sweet corn may be affected by pests and diseases such as smut (a disease caused by a fungus that degrades the seeds) or moth maize (a caterpillar that degrades the stem of the plant). Subsequently these diseases cause a slower growth of the plant, which can even lead to the death of the latter. Sweet corn is a vegetable but also a seed.
