The objective of Nutrition Month 2017 is to encourage Canadians to put an end to their conflictual relationship with food and try to find solutions thanks to dietitians.
The slogan sums up the three-step approach: Take the fight out of food! Spot the problem, get the facts and seek support.
The Dietitians of Canada want consumers to enjoy eating without frustration or confusion. Given the current context of abundant and more or less reliable information, Canadians have many concerns about healthy eating.
This year’s campaign invites the public to give up their “food fights” with a three-point plan:
- Spot the problem. Define what’s causing your fight with food first.
- Get the facts. Use facts from credible sources to decide what needs to be done to solve the problem.
- Seek support. Put the plan into action with support from a dietitian, family and friends.
Better manage five common “food fights”
The Dietitians of Canada website provides practical fact sheets on five complex food issues:
- Food fads: finding one’s way through the profusion of advice found on the Internet and social media?
- Digestive woes: understanding bloating and gas; assessing whether a gluten-free diet might be desirable.
- Picky eaters: reclaiming happy family mealtimes where children discover the pleasure of eating all foods at their own pace.
- Eating and stress: finding ways to manage negative feelings and stress without turning to food.
- Managing a health condition: adapting food choices to one’s lifestyle and illness.
