Vegetable garden: growing cucumber
From February to April, the cucumber is sown in pockets (2-3 seeds per hole) in nursery. Cucumber does not stand the cold; the temperature shall never be lower than 12°C. Then end of May transplant seedlings outdoors. Harvesting takes place 3 to 4 months after planting.
As with many vegetables, cucumber can be attacked by pests and diseases such as powdery mildew (a white, powdery fungal growth occurs on the upper leaf surface and often spreads to the underside), anthracnose (a fungus which causes swelling of the leaves) or grey cucurbit (a small insect that sucks the sap). Subsequently these diseases cause a slower growth of the plant, which can even lead to the death of the latter. Cucumber is a vegetable but also a fruit.
